Description
Some Americans are wearing safety pins as a symbol of solidarity with victims of racism, homophobia and religious discrimination. People have spoken out on Twitter to say that their safety pins show that they are allies to marginalized groups. The trend began in the UK, where people started wearing safety pins after the country's vote to leave the European Union in June.
Wearing the safety pin is not a political statement, nor is it an indication of party affiliation. It's an "anti-hate" symbol.
Safety pins won't undo all the rips in the fabric of society, any more than they can undo rips in the fabric of your clothing. But in a crisis when things are unraveling to your dismay, they'll give you a chance to try and patch things up, or at least hold our broken world together for the time being.
A simple safety pin sends a subtle, comforting, yet very powerful message to others that they are safe with you, no matter who they are, who they love, what language they speak or what name they give to the God they follow.
I have hope that's something most people can agree upon. if we ever needed something to bring all of us together, it's now!
