Description
We had a "Strawberry Moon" on June 24, 2021 and, at my age, I really didn't know what it was. I had guessed about it's timing and the ripening of strawberries, but I decided to find out.
Here is what I learned: Junes's full moon, the last full moon of spring or the first of summer, is called the Strawberry Moon. This name was used by several native American tribes, the Algonquin, Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota peoples, among others. It marked the ripening of “June-bearing” strawberries that are ready to be gathered. The Haida term Berries Ripen Moon reflects this as well. As flowers bloom and early fruit ripens, June is a time of great abundance for many.
