Description
This magnificent neo-Gothic church with fine architecture, and an exterior using Ecuadorian themed gargoyles, and the panoramic views from its immense towers is one of Quito's treasures. This is a view of its interior, bathed in an early morning light.
The Basílica del Sagrado Voto Nacional (Basilica of the National Vte) is a grand building that has been compared to the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. This Roman Catholic church is a neo-Gothic masterpiece and the largest of its kind in the Americas. Its stunning architecture and beautiful sanctuary, chapels and windows are stunning.
The basilica was constructed at the turn of the 20th century and was completed in 1909, relying heavily on donations from worshippers. Townspeople donated stones to the church’s construction and in exchange their names were engraved into the rock.
Situated on a steep hill to the northeast of the historic center, the basilica is a prominent feature in the skyline from almost any viewpoint in the city. This church’s intricate neo-Gothic details are a delight and the carved grotesques of native Ecuadorian animals such as armadillos, iguanas, dolphins and Galapagos tortoises that adorn the church’s arches.
If you have the chance to go there, be sure to climb up the tower to see magnificent views of the city and the architectural detail up close.
