Description
I took this photo at the Sacramento Zoo and while this was not one of the animals "on view" it was such a beautiful pigeon that I was happy it was domesticated enough that I could get fairly close. The beauty of the colors on the feathers were really captivating. And I admit...I fed it for being so kind as to let me take its photo.
Like most pigeons you find in urban or suburban settings this is a feral Rock Pigeons. They are the common blue variety of pigeons that roost on buildings and forage for food in public plazas. In the countryside, they often roost in barns or around bridges and natural cliff areas. Feral pigeons sometimes cross-breed with domestic pigeons, passing on color and plumage variations down through generations.
Feral pigeons are well adapted to cities, suburbs and rural areas. Unless you find an injured feral pigeon or an orphaned baby, wild pigeons should generally be left alone to live as wild birds.
The actual background was fairly dull and I felt it needed more color and less distraction so I used on of Jai Johnson's textures to enhance its beauty.
