Description
This is a delightful ball park in my home town, Stockton, California. It is the home of the Stockton Ports, a minor league farm team for the Oakland A's and a great venue to see good baseball. It is a lovely design and a very welcoming ball park. The history of baseball in Stockton is intriguing.
After playing at Billy Hebert Field in Oak Park since 1950, the Stockton Ports moved into their new waterfront home at Banner Island Ballpark in 2005.
The Ports hosted their inaugural home opener at Banner Island Ballpark on Thursday, April 28, 2005. The Ports defeated the San Jose Giants, 7-4, in a sold-out crowd of 5,287 fans.
The Ports have been highly successful in the new stadium, making five post-season appearances and winning one California League Championship title since 2005. The Ports welcomed their 1 millionth fan in stadium history on July 30, 2009.
The ballpark opened 377 calendar days after their April 17, 2004 ground-breaking ceremony. The ballpark features 4,200 fixed seats, four luxury suites, two picnic areas, an elevated club seating area, and over capacity of 5,200.
Banner Island Ballpark was built by the City of Stockton, and was designed by HKS, Inc. The ballpark was built as part of the revitalization project for the Downtown Stockton Waterfront area, and was built concurrently with the Stockton Arena.
The Banner Island area is allegedly the home of the Stockton baseball team which played in the late 1800s, in an area known as "Mudville" along the San Joaquin River. Banner Island was once an island in the San Joaquin River delta. Although the area is no longer an island, the name remains.
Because of the history surrounding Banner Island Ballpark, the stadium was given a historical certificate and named a historical site on August 10, 2008 by the Stockton Cultural Heritage Board. Banner Island was not only the home of professional baseball in Stockton, but also the site where Charles Weber flew the flag to celebrate Union victories during the Civil War (hence "Banner Island"), where Coxey's Army was camped in 1893, and where World War II ships were constructed. The Stockton Ports are proud to be part of the history of Banner Island.
